Nike Aura project (2004)

Project for Nike Asia, commissioned by Wieden+Kennedy Tokyo. The brief: "Show the individual energy and aura that women achieve when they do real, cardio exercises. More specifically, we hope to capture women at their beautiful peak of activity (running, spinning, martial art aerobics, etc.) and the effect it has on their AURA through colorful art and graphics fused with the photograph." The campaign ran in the entire Asian region, and included posters, point-of-purchase adverts and booklets.

3 images:
1. "Pre-aura", where the athlete is just beginning to generate energy.
2. "Full Aura", where the athlete is truly glowing.
3. "Pure Aura", where only the pure energy of the aura remains.

My solution: A computational approach with spiraling shapes and washes of color emerging from and meshing with the body of the model. I drew motion outlines manually and fed them into a software I wrote using Java2D to generate curves and color waves. Compositing was done in Photoshop. All files were done in super-hires. An unusal project for me and a first for integrating my computational imagery with photography.

For Wieden + Kennedy: John C Jay and Sumiko Sato (W+K Tokyo creative directors) and +cruz (W+K Tokyo art director).
