Drawing machine 1-12 (2003)

Commission for Odin.dep.no, the electronic publishing service for the Norwegian Government and Ministries of State. The NorwegianNational Foundation for Art in Public Spaces initiated the project as a pilot project for art in what can be considered a public digital space.

My response was to create a series of "drawing machines", pieces of software that draw images based on different strategies for movement and composition on a 2-dimensional surface. Each machine draws an image over a time span of two months, so that the image displayed on the Odin web pages develop continously over the 2 years the project runs. Images are created on two levels: The macro level, where the whole canvas can be seen at once, and the micro level, where the area around the current position of the drawing machine creates a different composition.

The project started running June 1 2003. As of June 2004, drawing machine 1 through 6 have completed their runs and produced finished images. Software used: Java w/ Java2D API, Windows Media 9.
