The Vision of Propeller Z for Gasometer Town

Projects — Coop Himmelb(l)au

When Austrian architects Propeller Z were presented with the task of revitalizing a past relic into a modern spectacle, they not only embraced the challenge but transformed it into a mesmerizing architectural feat. Tasked with designing the new offices for telecommunications giant Hutchison 3G, more commonly recognized as "3," Propeller Z drew inspiration from the unique structure of their canvas: a renovated gas power station on the outskirts of Vienna, affectionately known as a gasometer.

A Circular Design Inspired by Its Historical Roots

The gasometer's inherent circular layout presented a unique opportunity to deviate from conventional office design. With a sweeping central corridor as its spine, Propeller Z's design spreads gracefully over three levels, each infused with a sense of continuity and fluidity befitting the circular motif.

Collaborative Efforts in Visual Storytelling

Understanding that every space communicates a narrative, Propeller Z invited three esteemed design teams to impart their creative interpretations upon the walls of the gasometer's central corridor. Among these was Products of Play, who took point in creating an algorithmic visual feast that would thread through the core of the office space.

Products of Play: Weaving a Visual Landscape

Products of Play's approach to the visual narrative of the gasometer offices was nothing short of ingenious. Commencing with the overarching theme of circles, they conceived an intricate algorithmic pattern derived from layered sine waves. This dynamic design rippled across the entire circumference of the corridor, its scale and hue dancing in delightful variations to engender localized visual spectacles along its path.

Innovative Wayfinding: A Confluence of Degrees and Directions

To complement the gasometer's circular design, Propeller Z envisioned a wayfinding system steeped in the language of navigation, delineated by degrees. Not one to leave a stone unturned, Products of Play augmented this with compass markings and quantified distances to the nearest elevators, ensuring every step within the premises is one taken with absolute certainty.

Unveiling a Triad of Creative Minds

Alongside Products of Play, the creative team featured the talents of Alexei Tylevich and the duo Mevis & van Deursen. Each team brought their individual flair to the space, with Tylevich and Mevis & van Deursen delivering their unique visual stories that harmonized with the algorithmic waves and contributed to a holistic creative symphony.

Gasometer Town: A Nexus of Work and Exploration

The synthesis of innovative design and artistic collaboration at Gasometer Town is a testament to the evolution of the workplace into a domain of wonder and exploration. The offices of Hutchison 3G stand as a beacon for forward-thinking architecture and design, inspiring visitors and employees alike to embark on their own journeys, whether through the avenues of imagination within the walls of the office or beyond, into the vibrant city of Vienna and all it has to offer.
